Preschool children from The Nursery in Portishead visited one of Portishead’s much loved community gardens to celebrate National Children’s Gardening Week.
The children got their hands dirty, explored the soil and discovered some of the wonders of nature as well as playing with the toy lawnmowers, digging and admiring the flowers grown by volunteers at the community garden adjacent to Portishead Health Centre.
Children’s Gardening Week is a great reminder in today’s fast-paced digital world, how important it is to encourage children to step outside, explore the outdoors and engage in hands-on activities that promote creativity, curiosity and a love for nature.
Some of the children at The Nursery are also currently growing potatoes as part of a children’s growing competition for the Portishead Summer Show.
Gardening provides numerous benefits for children, teaching them patience, responsibility and the importance of nurturing living things. Through gardening, our children learn about the life cycle of plants, the concept of seasons and the role of insects and animals in the garden ecosystem.
Children’s Gardening Week, which this year ran from 25th May to 2nd June, is an annual event dedicated to encouraging children to get involved in gardening and foster a long lasting love for nature.
