Pumpkin Picking Fun for The Nursery in Portishead

Pumpkin picking has definitely become one of our favourite annual traditions at The Nursery in Portishead, and this year was no exception. We were very excited to pull on our wellies, wrap up warm and head out for a fun-filled autumn morning at Triggols Farm pumpkin patch.

As soon as we arrived, there were lots of excited “wows” from the children as they spotted rows and rows of pumpkins stretching across the patch. There were pumpkins in every shape, size and colour imaginable, giving the children plenty to explore, compare and talk about as they made their way around the farm.

The children had a wonderful time filling wheelbarrows, crunching through colourful autumn leaves and searching carefully for their favourite pumpkins. Some were big and round, some were small and bumpy, and others had unusual colours and shapes, which sparked lots of lovely conversations and questions. It was a brilliant opportunity for the children to use descriptive language, practise decision-making and enjoy learning through real-life outdoor experiences.

At The Nursery, we love giving children opportunities to explore the world around them, and seasonal trips like pumpkin picking are a fantastic way to support curiosity, confidence and early learning. Being outdoors in the fresh air, noticing changes in nature and taking part in hands-on activities all help children develop a deeper understanding of the seasons and the environment.

After carefully choosing our pumpkins, we brought them back to nursery so the fun could continue. The children enjoyed exploring what was inside the pumpkins with their friends, looking at the seeds, textures and smells, and talking about what they discovered. These simple activities are a lovely way to encourage sensory play, communication, teamwork and creativity.

Our pumpkin picking trip was a wonderful autumn adventure and a memorable experience for the children. We are already looking forward to continuing this much-loved tradition again next year.
