Celebrating National Smile Month at The Nursery in Portishead
We have been brushing up on our dental hygiene knowledge at The Nursery in Portishead as part of National Smile Month, with a special visit from our neighbours at Combe Road Dental Practice.
National Smile Month is a great opportunity to help children learn more about looking after their teeth in a fun, positive and age-appropriate way. Good dental habits start early, so we were delighted to welcome Principal Dentist Dr Karim Abdel-Khalek and Lead Dental Nurse Shannon Mason, who joined our preschool children for an engaging session all about keeping teeth healthy.
The children were very excited to meet the dental team and enjoyed chatting about toothbrushing, healthy food choices and what we can all do to look after our smiles. Dr Karim and Shannon were very impressed by how much the children already knew, especially when talking about which foods are better for our teeth and which foods we should only enjoy as occasional treats.
During the visit, the children had lots of fun exploring a variety of toothbrushes and learning how they are used. They also took turns brushing a set of oversized model teeth, which helped them practise brushing in a hands-on and memorable way. Activities like this are a brilliant way to support early learning, helping children build confidence while developing important self-care routines.
The session also gave the children the chance to ask questions, share their own experiences of visiting the dentist and, of course, practise their very best smiles. It was lovely to see them so engaged and enthusiastic about looking after their teeth.
At The Nursery, we believe that everyday life skills are an important part of early years education. Visits from local professionals, such as our neighbours at Combe Road Dental Practice, help bring learning to life and strengthen our links with the local Portishead community.
A big thank you to Dr Karim, Shannon and the team at Combe Road Dental Practice for visiting us once again and making dental health such a fun and positive experience for our preschool children.
