Planting Kindness in Portishead for Our 10th Anniversary

As part of our 10th anniversary celebrations at The Nursery in Portishead, we were delighted to donate 10 beautiful rose bushes to the Willow Community Garden, located beside the medical centre in Victoria Square.

Reaching 10 years is a very special milestone for The Nursery, and we wanted to mark the occasion in a way that felt meaningful, lasting and connected to our local community. Rather than simply celebrating within the nursery, we felt it was important to give something back to Portishead and create something that could be enjoyed by others for years to come.

The children played an important role in deciding how we should celebrate. After lots of lovely ideas and conversations, they agreed that gifting roses would be the perfect choice. Flowers are always a favourite with the children, and they love spending time outdoors, exploring nature and getting their hands dirty through gardening activities. The idea of planting something beautiful that would grow and bloom felt like a wonderful way to represent 10 happy years of learning, care and friendship at The Nursery.

The Willow Community Garden is a welcoming and therapeutic outdoor space led by Revd Lindsay Smith, where people can connect with others, spend time in nature and enjoy the benefits of fresh air, gardening and community. It is a place that brings people together, and the children always enjoy visiting the garden, making our donation even more special.

Gardening and outdoor learning are an important part of life at The Nursery in Portishead. Activities like planting, watering and caring for flowers help children learn about the natural world, the changing seasons and the importance of looking after living things. They also support confidence, curiosity, responsibility and teamwork, all while giving children valuable time outdoors.

Donating the rose bushes was a lovely way to celebrate our nursery’s 10th year while helping to brighten a much-loved local space. We hope the roses will continue to grow and bloom for many years to come, bringing colour, joy and a reminder of this special anniversary to everyone who visits the Willow Community Garden.

A heartfelt thank you to everyone involved in helping us mark this milestone and to the children for choosing such a thoughtful and beautiful way to celebrate.
